Job Summary

Position Title: Teacher: Music

Supervises: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.

Job Goal: To develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.

Qualifications: 1. Possess valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate. 2. Properly endorsed in appropriate teaching field. 3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable. 4. Provide own or have access to appropriate transportation to meet job requirements.

Reports To: School Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools.

Salary: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Teach skills in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble, and chorus). Utilize course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.
  3. Plan a balanced music program, and organize daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  4. Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  5. Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
  6. Control the storage and use of school-owned property.
  7. Instruct pupils in use, care, and safe operation of musical instruments. Make minor adjustments and repairs to equipment as required.
  8. Maintain an auditable record of pupil attendance and make daily reports.
  9. Control assigned district-owned music equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse.
  10. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
  11. Evaluate, select, and requisition books, instructional aids, equipment, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records.
  12. Maintain professional competence through inservice education activities.
  13. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  14. Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
  15. Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilize appropriate state standards, guides, tasks lists, etc.
  16. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  17. Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  18. Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district's and school's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  19. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  20. Evaluate student progress on a regular basis.
  21. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, policy and administrative regulation.
  22. Assist the principal in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  23. Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.
  24. Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration.
  25. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  26. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provides nine week and mid-nine week progress reports as well as keeping students and parents aware of at least weekly progress.
  27. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
  28. Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. Meet at least minimum school district requirements for the annual number of inservice hours.
  29. Budget funds for equipment and supplies and keeps appropriate records.
  30. Assist the Coordinator of Bands in maintaining and supervising the use of music equipment and uniforms. Maintains and implements written control policy regarding both.
  31. Assist the administration with and/or supervises entry and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons area as assigned.
  32. Assist the Coordinator of Bands with the supervision of the total Phenix City Public School band program.
  1. As directed by, and in conjunction with the principal, establishes and maintains the annual band budget at his/her school.
  2. Work closely with the Phenix City Band Boosters organization and attend all booster functions.
  3. After consultation with and approval by the school principal, schedules all band performances/rehearsals.
  4. Represent his/her school at appropriate local, state, and regional musical events.
  5. Assist in scheduling all band related transportation and securing chaperones for all related trips.
  6. Assist the Coordinator of Bands in writing, publishing, and disseminating an annual band handbook consisting of rules, regulations, and operating procedures of the band program.
  7. Assist the Coordinator of Bands in the preparation and readiness of the band practice field.
  8. Assume responsibility at his/her school for ensuring that each band member has proper insurance/permission forms on file.
  9. Assume other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.
  10. In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives and student outcomes.
  11. Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides.
  12. Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students.
  13. In order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process, the teacher should be able to manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school.
  14. Continually communicate to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
  15. Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
  16. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
  17. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
  18. Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  19. Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and generally conducive to learning.
  20. Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor or Superintendent.

  2. Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
