Academic Advisor
100% Time- Reports to EWU Director of Enrollment/Retention Management Services
Qualifications:
Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in counseling, higher education administration, student affairs or related field. Master’s degree preferred in same areas.
Experience in higher education for at least 2 years in academic counseling, student affairs and familiarity with cohort or intrusive advising models.
Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Experience in academic affairs and working with faculty required.
Knowledge of current issues, trends and best practices in working with first and second-year students in a University setting.
Sensitivity, understanding, experience and commitment to the needs of students including adult learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Proficiency in using EWU’s student information systems and familiarity with Internet computer and web-based technology.
Familiarity with academic policies, FERPA and student development theory preferred.
Responsibilities:
Assists in providing academic and retention advising, including course selection support (program planning, worksheet reviews), academic progress monitoring (SAP) and development of personalized success strategies for cohort new students in their first year and continuing students in their second year.
Performs as the designated person during the student’s journey including orientation, workshops and regular check-ins to ensure early intervention for at-risk or disengaged students.
Provides students with a robust University experience that builds strong retention, graduation and completion rates.
Works closely with and supports the academic success of students through outreach appointments, academic related workshops and other activities.
Collaborates and works closely with EWU Program Directors of academic departments and other faculty to meet objectives and activities for in-person and on-line courses that foster student’s academic success.
Collaborates and works closely with EWU’s Admissions staff, EWU’s Financial Aid staff and EWU’s Counseling and Student Affairs staff and other campus resources, i.e., Student Success Center, tutoring, career services, etc. to meet objectives and activities that foster and support student’s retention and overall personal development.
Maintains accurate records of advisor-student interactions, works with EWU faculty in tracking academic progress, and documents interventions using SIS (Elements, Element451, EdSights, etc.).
Supports EWU’s Program Directors in working toward a targeted 10% increase in retention rate and a 5-10% increase of graduation rate year to year for EWU’s first and second year students.
